About this award
The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 4 awarded a $115,666 Cooperative Agreement to Tangled Bank Conservation, a minority-owned, small disadvantaged business, under the Candidate Species Conservation program (CFDA 15.660). Through this 3-year award from June 2023 to June 2026, Tangled Bank Conservation will sequence existing tissues and gather additional tissues to assess the threat of hybridization and quantify population sizes across the range of the Alabama red-bellied turtle, which are priority recovery actions for this species. The work addresses the 3 R's (research, recovery, and restoration) and will inform the FY26 5-year status review for this candidate species. The award involves a partnership between state, federal, academic, and private agencies.
Description
Moreover, the population sizes and genetic health of the 10 listed populations are not known. Here we propose to sequence existing tissues for 5 of the populations, and gather additional tissues from the remaining 5 populations, to assess the threat of hybridization across the species range (a priority 1 recovery action), and to quantify population sizes across the range (a priority 2 recovery action). Our work addresses the 3 RS, will be used to inform the FY26 5-year status review, and is a partnership between state, federal, academic, and private agencies.
