About this award

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Region 3 awarded a $189,250 Cooperative Agreement to Ecosystems Connections Institute, LLC under the National Fish Passage Program (CFDA 15.685) to support the removal of a low-head dam and fish passage barrier on the Little Wabash River in northern Indiana. This project will reconnect 423 stream miles (181,124 acres) of upstream aquatic habitat and provide access to nearly 500 meters of new fish and mussel habitat that is currently inaccessible due to the barrier. As a woman-owned small business, Ecosystems Connections Institute will leverage its expertise in aquatic ecosystem restoration to plan, permit, and execute the dam removal, site restoration, and associated habitat assessments and wildlife monitoring. This work aligns with the National Fish Passage Program's objectives to maintain and increase native fish populations, improve ecosystem resiliency, and enhance recreational fishing opportunities by removing barriers and restoring aquatic connectivity.

Description

The stream joins the mainstem of the wabash river at river mile 406. The stream has a watershed area of 284 square miles and the watershed is predominantly cultivated agriculture where IT accounts for nearly 75 . The remainder of the watershed is fragmented small riparian forests and the upper part of the watershed is within the suburban area of FT. Wayne, indiana. The stream is notable from a historical and cultural perspective and runs through the southside of huntington, indiana at river mile 2. There is a low-head DAM and fish passage barrier in the little river is at river mile 2.2 above the confluence with the wabash river. Removal of this barrier would reconnect 423-stream miles (181,124-acres) above the DAM and open nearly 500-meters of new fish and mussel habitat that is currently in the pool behind the DAM.
