Description
This project will focus on restoration at kiholo fishpond to improve estuarine and fishpond habitat, assess the effectiveness of restoration efforts, coordinate a peer-learning network of restoration managers, and engage volunteers and students in this community-based effort. This project will improve biodiversity, water quality, and habitat conditions while producing results that will inform the broader scientific and management communities focused on restoring fishpond and estuary habitat. Kiholo fishpond has an intact passage to kiholo BAY that allows fishery species to migrate between habitats at different life history stages. However, the fishpond estuary has been degraded by a combination of tsunami damage, sedimentation from organic detritus from invasive vegetation, and non-native species that reduce available space for native species. Excess organic material from invasive vegetation has decomposed into organic sediment, impacting benthic habitat for native and endemic species which depend upon hard bottom habitat for foraging and shelter. The project will restore the fishpond through two objectives: objective 1: restore estuarine and benthic habitat at kiholo fishpond through vegetation management and sediment removal and objective 2: measure and share the results of restoration efforts through scientific monitoring and collaborative peer-learning networks.
