About this award

The U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 3 awarded a $480,506.87 Cooperative Agreement under the National Fish Passage program (CFDA 15.685) to Michigan Trout Unlimited, a non-profit organization. The funding will support a project to provide aquatic organism passage to 23 miles of the East Branch of the Au Sable River at the Grayling Fish Hatchery, where passage has been blocked for over 100 years. This will allow brook trout and other species to move freely throughout the sub-watershed. The project will also improve in-stream habitat and stream function at the hatchery site through the restoration of grade, an increase in cross-sectional area, and the installation of habitat elements to benefit fish and aquatic organisms. The project period is from July 1, 2023, to December 31, 2025.

Description

The east branch is a key brook trout system within the AU sable watershed. Reconnection will allow brook trout and other species to move freely throughout the sub-watershed. In addition, in-stream habitat and stream function will be improved throughout the hatchery site through the restoration of grade, an increase in cross-sectional area, and the installation of habitat elements which will benefit fish and aquatic organisms.
