Description
Reed canary grass is prolific along indian ford creek and specifically at the headwaters of the stream at black butte ranch. Seeds and vegetative fragments of reed canary grass float, which makes streams effective dispersal corridors. Seed germination peaks in march-may and again in june-july and generally only need a single growing season to become established. RCG towers over other native species, utilizing all available space and light.to begin the aggressive management of reed canary grass in the indian ford watershed, efforts must start at the source to decrease the amount of seed dispersal and establishment downstream. The purpose of this project is to perform a variety of best management practices over a 3-year time frame to reduce and manage reed canary grass populations at black butte ranch. This will begin the long-term watershed scale management of reed canary grass within indian ford watershed. Practices will be performed in both the fall and spring seasons for the 3-year time frame and include: herbicide treatment, grazing, excavation, mowing, seeding, and tree shrub planting. Below are maps of the past surveyed of reed canary grass that will be receiving treatment over a 3-year time.
