About this award
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (MDEGLE) received a $264,750 cooperative agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 3 under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative program (CFDA 15.662). The award will support MDEGLE's examination of current concentrations and spatial distribution of contaminants of mutual concern in fish in the Michigan nearshore waters of Lake Superior from May 1, 2023 through September 30, 2025. As the designated state agency, MDEGLE will identify trends in contaminant exposure to assess the health of fish communities, piscivorous wildlife, and long-term ecosystem health. The results will help link environmental contaminant levels to top-level predators such as fish-eating birds.
Description
The ability to identify trends in contaminant exposure is a valuable tool for assessing the health of fish communities and piscivorous wildlife as well as long-term ecosystem health. Fish provide an important food source for higher trophic level species as well as reflect bioaccumulation of contaminants at lower trophic levels, making them important in linking environmental concentrations of cmcs to top-level predators, such as fish-eating birds.
