About this award

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Region 5 awarded a $350,000 cooperative agreement to Native Plant Trust Inc., doing business as Garden in the Woods, to develop a native seed network in New England and increase the availability of high priority native seed for conservation from September 1, 2022 to December 31, 2026. This award was made under the National Wildlife Refuge System Enhancements program (CFDA 15.654), which provides assistance to identify, conserve, manage, and enhance natural, historical, and cultural resources within the National Wildlife Refuge System.

As the sole organization currently positioned to serve as a regional seed hub in New England, Native Plant Trust will coordinate a regional native seed network framework to help build a native seed pipeline and increase the native seeds and plants available for ecological restoration that are of local provenance. Leveraging its decades of experience managing the sole seed bank for rare and endangered plant species in New England as well as applying seed collection, cleaning, drying, freezing, and long-term storage expertise to more common native species, Native Plant Trust is well-suited to serve as the regional seed hub for this project.
