Description
Woodland expansion into rangelands alters ecosystem structure and function, reduces wildlife habitat, and threatens the financial sustainability of working ranches this partnership proposes to assemble aerial imagery from the 1940 1960S to further identify the historical expansion of conifers into native rangelands these historic aerial photos, archived by the U S geological survey, will be GEO rectified and assembled for visualization across the 17 westernmost states covering the whole of the sagebrush biome historical imagery will then be combined with present day estimates of woodland expansion from the rangeland analysis platform https rangelands APP to provide a 70 year perspective of woodland expansion practitioners considering where to work can visualize across the biome whether woodland expansion is reducing rangeland productivity with an easy to use web application once complete, the university of montana will provide two technical transfer opportunities, such as webinars, to train users in operation of the newly developed tool and to demonstrate potential applications for conservation planning, implementation, and effectiveness monitoring
