About this award

The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 3 awarded West Virginia University a $284,492 cooperative agreement under the Great Lakes Restoration CFDA 15.662 program. The purpose of this project is to genetically determine the sex of individual lake sturgeon to analyze sex ratios across populations in the Lake Superior basin. Under the award, West Virginia University will genetically determine the sex of individual fish by analyzing tissue samples using a new genetic test that facilitates accurate sex identification. The deliverables will be an individual sex determination for each fish contributing to various lake sturgeon populations managed across the Lake Superior basin. This information will provide critical data to better assess outcomes of lake sturgeon management and conservation actions in the region, benefiting federal, state, and tribal natural resource agencies in the Lake Superior basin.

Description

In the laboratory, SEX of each indiviudal fish will be determined by analyzing a small tissue sample using a recently developed genetic that facilitates accurate SEX identification. The deliverables of this project will be an individual SEX determination for each fish that contributes to various populations of lake strugeon being managed across the lake superior basin. This information will help provide critical information needed to better assess the outcomes of lake sturgeon management and conservation actions in lake superior. The intended beneficiaries of this informaiton are the various federal, state, and tribal natural resource conservation and management agencies across the lake superior basin.
