About this award

This $1.6 million cooperative agreement awarded by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 8 will provide the Hoopa Valley Tribe the ability to plan, design, implement, and monitor private lands habitat restoration projects in the Trinity and Klamath Basins of California from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2027. The projects will support shared restoration priorities of the Hoopa Valley Tribe and the Service's Partners for Fish and Wildlife program, which delivers the Department of the Interior's priorities through providing technical and financial assistance to private landowners and Native American tribes interested in voluntary conservation efforts. Specific restoration actions funded under this award could include riparian vegetation enhancement and protection, stream channel and bank restoration, upland restoration to reduce sediment input, and removal of fish passage barriers. The funding will expand the Tribe's capacity to participate in and help diversify implementation of restoration activities within the priority geographic region, in support of habitat restoration goals.

Description

This project will provide the hoopa valley tribe the ability to plan, design, implement, and monitor private lands habitat restoration projects in support of shared restoration priorities of the hoopa valley tribe and the services partners for fish and wildlife program (partners program). Specific restoration actions could include, but may not be limited to, riparian vegetation enhancement and protection, stream channel and stream bank restoration, upland restoration to reduce sediment input, and removal of fish passage barriers. The partners program in the klamath basin is operating under a prioritized approach to project selection that is aimed at reducing stressors to a few high priority resource concerns. This approach is described in the pacific southwest region partners for fish and wildlife program strategic plan. The intent is to expand tribal capacity and involvement in restoration activities within the trinity and klamath basin while simultaneously diversifying the overall restoration practitioner and implementation capabilities in the area. The increased restoration capacity in the klamath basin will support the tribe, the service and others in meeting the habitat restoration goals for the klamath basin.
