The Alaska Municipal League (AML) was awarded a $9,859,649 Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Department of Energy's Conservation Research and Development program (CFDA 81.086) on January 1, 2025. Through this award, AML will foster collaboration between three school districts in rural, disadvantaged Alaskan communities to improve the energy efficiency of eleven school facilities. AML will lead a facilitated planning effort, conduct energy audits, and ensure the successful deployment of energy efficiency improvements that will reduce oil fuel use, greenhouse gas emissions, and electricity costs for the local educational agencies. The project aims to increase the energy efficiency of all school buildings, reduce diesel fuel consumption for power and heating, and advance economically delivered power to community facilities to lower the energy burden. This effort will leverage partnerships between the school districts and local government to facilitate financing and enable community-wide benefits through the scalability of energy efficiency technologies.
