The work combines preserved...
- This Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA 11.469) provides $110,000 to the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) to explore renewable energy-based methods for kelp processing in three selected locations in Alaska: Cordova, Homer, and Kodiak. The key activities include: 1) Assessing the solar energy potential of the three locations to determine how much solar energy can be...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Macrobreed LLC $173,223 on September 30, 2025, under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program (CFDA 10.212) to develop a breeding program for sugar kelp cultivars with reduced iodine and heavy metal content. The project aims to lower production costs for the domestic kelp farming industry while improving food safety and nutritional value. Current kelp production requires energy-intensive blanching to...
- The Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded Oregon State University $335,000 on March 15, 2026, under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087) to characterize and leverage two existing open-source wave energy conversion platforms (LUPA and FOSWEC) for long-term use by the marine energy community. The project will demonstrate co-design informed pathways to hardware selection and lifecycle cost of energy (LCOE) reduction across two...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Ocean Era Inc. $174,129 under the Small Business Innovation Research Program on September 15, 2025, to develop automated systems and production protocols for cultivating high-value tropical macroalgae species. Ocean Era will identify optimum culture parameters for two representative tropical macroalgae through laboratory and field trials, determine best practices for seeding and harvest at commercial scale, and...
- The Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded the University of Hawaii $497,024 under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087) on December 1, 2025, for a project grant investigating a hybrid marine renewable energy solution to power offshore Hawaiian kanpachi fish farming operations. The project builds on advances by the University of Hawaii and Hawaii Ocean Power Solutions LLC in developing the HALONA oscillating water column type...
- The University of Alaska Fairbanks received a two-year, $275,000 Project Grant from the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy to assess the nutrient bioextraction capacity of kelp aquaculture in US farms and implications for conservation and management. Through this funding, the University will analyze kelp's ability to absorb nutrients from surrounding waters in aquaculture operations, with the aim of informing sustainable farming practices. The grant period runs...
- The Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded Purdue University a $1.251 million cooperative agreement on October 1, 2025, to develop a wave-powered pumpless seawater desalination system under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087). The work is performed at West Lafayette, Indiana, with a completion date of March 14, 2029. The program funds balanced, long-term research in renewable energy technologies including solar, biomass,...
- The Department of Energy's Office of Science has awarded a $199,979 Project Grant to Ocean Renewable Power Co Inc. in Portland, Maine to develop "Embedded Instrumentation for Detection of Flow Separation." The funding, which runs from July 22, 2024 to July 21, 2025, supports the company's research and development of advanced instrumentation and technologies for detecting flow separation in marine energy systems. This work aligns with the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program...
- The Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded Washington Maritime Blue a $100,000 Cooperative Agreement on November 1, 2025, under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087) to establish the Pacific Northwest Water Power Program (PNW-WPP) supporting accelerated commercialization of marine energy and hydropower technologies. The award funds the first budget period (9 months, obligated through September 30, 2026) to recruit mentors and...
The Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded a Cooperative Agreement worth $1,073,464 to Macro Oceans Inc. on September 1, 2026, under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087). Macro Oceans Inc. will demonstrate a technically and economically scalable pathway for bioconversion of kelp waste into ethanol and establish kelp-based ethanol as commercially viable relative to corn-based ethanol. The recipient will conduct analysis and validation of polymers and monomers present in kelp waste for conversion to fuel-grade ethanol and platform chemical feedstock; optimize hydrolysis processes and parameters to release fermentable sugars from feedstocks; perform microbial screening to identify organisms capable of handling high-salinity environments and utilizing non-conventional sugars, particularly uronic acids, then develop a fermentation process to convert those sugars to ethanol; recover and purify ethanol from fermentation broth; and perform a techno-economic analysis to demonstrate scalability. Expected outcomes include an effective hydrolysis technique, bioconversion of kelp waste hydrolysate into ethanol, and a complete techno-economic analysis. Work is performed in San Francisco, California. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026 through November 30, 2026.
