The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded a $7,931,941 Cooperative Agreement to Espin Technologies, Inc., a minority-owned small disadvantaged business located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The grant, under the DOE's Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087), aims to design, develop, and pilot-demonstrate a superior electrospun nanofiber-based separator for liquid alkaline electrolyzer (LAE) systems. The new separator is intended to have low thickness, low resistance, high ion transport efficiency, low gas crossover, and high mechanical strength, while being competitively priced and serving as a drop-in replacement for the current Zirfon separator. The successful completion of this project will bring this new nanofiber-based product to market, supporting the expansion of the hydrogen economy and decarbonization efforts, while creating a robust manufacturing base in the U.S. and promoting local economic development in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
