The Chemours Co FC LLC was awarded a $13,471,759 Cooperative Agreement by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (CFDA 81.087 - Renewable Energy Research and Development) to develop and demonstrate a mechanically tough, chemically stable, high-performance proton exchange membrane (PEM) for use in fuel cells and water electrolyzers. The project aims to advance PEM manufacturing capabilities to enable gigawatt-scale production, while establishing accelerated stress testing protocols and modeling tools to project membrane lifetime performance. This effort will leverage partnerships with key suppliers of PEM subcomponents to optimize the membrane and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) design. Additionally, the project will involve single-cell MEA testing, short stack evaluations, and ex-situ mechanical characterization to understand failure mechanisms and rapidly iterate solutions. The award has a period of performance from January 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026.
