The project will tackle three research interests: targeted behavioral research on bat deterrent stimuli, in-situ bat deterrent testing at a...
River Connectivity Solutions LLC was awarded a $206,498 project grant from the Department of Energy Office of Science under the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program (CFDA 81.049) to develop cost effective alternatives to gated selective withdrawal systems at non-powered dams. The grant will support River Connectivity Solutions' research and development of river connectivity systems from June 2022 through March 2023. The Office of Science Financial Assistance Program aims to transform...
The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $999,929 Project Grant under the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act (CFDA 15.517) program to California Trout, Inc. for a 3-year project. The purpose of this grant is to monitor and evaluate the ecological impacts of removing the Klamath River dams, which will open over 400 miles of previously blocked fish habitat. Key project activities include using sonar, species composition sampling, and radio telemetry to estimate salmon and steelhead abundance and...
The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) awarded a $750,000 Cooperative Agreement to Iowa State University of Science and Technology under the Renewable Energy Research and Development Program (CFDA 81.087). The goal of this 2.5-year project is to develop and demonstrate active and passive ultrasonic deterrents for wind turbines to reduce bat strikes. Key objectives include optimizing the acoustic performance of the deterrents, validating...
The U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service, through its National Fish Passage Program (CFDA 15.685), awarded a $56,476,862 Project Grant to the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) to build new state-of-the-art fishways at the Woodland Project and Grand Falls Project sites. These improvements will significantly enhance access to over 600 miles of historic sea-run fish habitat and 60,000 acres of alewife habitat, with the potential to produce the largest river herring...
This Project Grant award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the National Fish Passage Program (CFDA 15.685) provides $1,203,550.00 to American Rivers Inc. to implement a comprehensive aquatic habitat restoration project in Pennsylvania's Ohio and Susquehanna River basins. The key activities include removing 10 dams to reconnect 190 miles of aquatic habitat for species of conservation concern, imperiled, and federally endangered species. The project will also restore approximately 28...
This federal Project Grant award of $449,324 from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation under the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act (CFDA 15.517) program will fund a 4-year study by the Karuk Tribe of California to monitor juvenile salmonid survival and migration rates in the Klamath River basin. The project will use acoustic tags to track wild and hatchery-raised Chinook salmon in the Scott, Salmon, Trinity, and Klamath Rivers, and install an array of 32 acoustic receivers...
The Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded a $335,000 project grant to Oregon State University under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087). The goal of this 3-year project is to: (1) characterize and leverage two existing open-source wave energy conversion systems (WECs) for long-term use by the marine energy community; (2) demonstrate co-design informed pathways to hardware selection and LCOE reduction for two distinct WEC...
The Atlantic Salmon Federation Inc. was awarded a $570,664 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 5 under the Fish and Wildlife Management Assistance federal grant program (CFDA 15.608). Species that will benefit include alewife, American eel, American shad, Atlantic salmon, eastern brook trout, and...
The University of Maine System, through its University of Maine Division, was awarded a $118,005 Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Cooperative Research Units (CFDA 15.812) program. The project, titled "Range Wide, River-Specific Dam Impacts on Blueback Herring, Alewife and American Eel", will develop and parameterize river-specific population models for these three species across their entire ranges. The models will incorporate estimates of...

THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT IS TO ASSESS DIRECT SURVIVAL AND SUBLETHAL EFFECTS OF RESTORATION HYDROPOWER TURBINE (RHT) PASSAGE FOR LARGE AMERICAN EELS IN FIELD AND LABORATORY SETTINGS TO UNDERSTAND HOW THROUGH-TURBINE PASSAGE CAN FUNCTION AS A TOOL FOR DOWNSTREAM CONNECTIVITY FOR THESE HIGHLY IMPACTED MIGRATORY FISH, AND TO IMPROVE SURVIVAL MODELING METHODOLOGY FOR SAFE TURBINE DESIGN. THE INTENDED OUTCOMES OF THE PROJECT INCLUDE ADVANCING (1) THE SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED TO ENGINEER EEL-SAFE HYDROPOWER TURBINES AND (2) VIABILITY OF SAFE, TIMELY, AND EFFECTIVE PASSAGE OF EEL THROUGH COMMERCIALLY COMPETITIVE TURBINES, ALLOWING HYDROPOWER TURBINES TO CONTRIBUTE TO RESTORATION OF HEALTHY WATERSHEDS. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT FINDINGS WILL BE SUBMITTED FOR PUBLICATION IN PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS AND A FINAL TECHNICAL REPORT THAT WILL BE SUBMITTED TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY.
