Description
Inverse design of perovskite materials for solar thermochemical hydrogen production this project will identify a stable, high performance perovskite material composition and complementary reactor design that will achieve $1.5 /KG H2 and provide a pathway to the $1 /KG H2 "1,1,1" hydrogen shot goal and demonstrate its capabilities on sun. This will be achieved using an inverse materials and reactor design approach. The overarching goal will be achieved through sub-objectives including: 1) tea predicted material thermodynamic and cost characteristics required for the $1/KG H2 price point; 2) identify at least one perovskite composition with the necessary thermodynamic and cost characteristics; 3) optimize reactor configuration and performance to realize the solar-to-H2 conversion capabilities of the material. By the end of this project, not only will we have identified, characterized, and demonstrated material performance necessary to achieve the hydrogen shot "1,1,1" cost target, but we will have provided a new paradigm for H2 materials design. This project is structured into three budget periods (BP). The budget periods have the following objectives: BP1) identify composition with >20% solar to hydrogen efficiency based on the first order CEF as predicted by the thermodynamic system model BP2) tea predicted cost of $2.5 /KG H2, using experimentally measured thermodynamics properties and bulk processing costs BP3) identify composition which achieves predicted 1G H2/hour produciton on sun; verify that activity for H2 production is stable for 100 cycles; and outline a reactor and plant design pathway that achieves 50% participation in the project by traditionally underrepresented minority (URM) researchers at all levels and engage in interaction with URM student organizations in years 2 and 3 .
