The key products and services to be delivered under this grant include: Establishing the theoretical foundations of energy functions for...
- Cooperative Agreement Award Summary DRG Technical Solutions LLC received a $2.44 million Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy under the Renewable Energy Research and Development program (CFDA 81.087), awarded November 1, 2025, with completion targeted for October 31, 2028. The project demonstrates increased hydropower flexibility through the hybridization of hydrogen energy technology with a Colorado Springs Utilities...
- The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $267,049 Project Grant under the WaterSMART (Sustain and Manage America's Resources for Tomorrow) program to the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District in Nevada. The grant will fund the upgrade of two turbine runners at the district's 26-foot drop power plant. The project will replace fixed blade cast steel turbine runners with adjustable blade Kaplan style stainless steel runners, allowing the plant to start producing power at a lower flow of 80 cubic...
- Fervo Energy Company has been awarded a $3,984,899 cooperative agreement from the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) to develop a fiber optics-based diagnostic platform to monitor and optimize dynamic subsurface processes for geothermal energy storage and generation. With a performance period of August 2022 through August 2024, Fervo Energy will work to address major barriers to operating geothermal facilities flexibly through their "FervoFlex"...
- This NSF Project Grant award of $450,000 from the Directorate for Engineering (CFDA #47.041) aims to address oscillation issues in power grids with high levels of renewable energy generation. The key efforts include: Developing scalable, computationally manageable, and linearized models to simulate power grid dynamics and the associated cyber layer with realistic impacts like data packet drops and delays. Designing a centralized damping control scheme that uses phasor measurement unit (PMU)...
- Rcam Technologies Inc. received a $200,000 Project Grant award from the Department of Energy Office of Science on June 27, 2022 to develop a low cost, 3D concrete printed, modular, marine pumped hydroelectric storage system. The award is being carried out in San Antonio, TX under the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program (CFDA #81.049), which supports basic research to transform understanding of nature and advance U.S. energy security and economic competitiveness. Specifically, the...
- This National Science Foundation project grant of $333,289 will support research from August 2022 to July 2025 related to adaptive, human-centric coordination of demand-side flexibility at scale in electric power distribution networks. Funded under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), the award to Washington State University will enable the development of analytics and a prototype system to efficiently leverage flexible demand commitments from multiple small consumers in uncertain electric...
WITH THE SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN INTERMITTENT ENERGY RESOURCES SUCH AS WIND AND SOLAR, A POWER PLANT'S ABILITY TO PROVIDE FLEXIBLE OPERATIONS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. THIS IMPORTANCE IS REFLECTED IN CURRENT REGIONAL TRANSMISSION ORGANIZATION (RTO) ECONOMICS AND UTILITY TARIFFS: UTILITIES CAN CREATE VALUE IN THEIR HYDROPOWER PLANTS FROM, AND INDEPENDENT POWER PRODUCERS CAN RECEIVE SIGNIFICANT PAYMENTS FOR, HAVING ON-DEMAND GENERATION AND ANCILLARY SERVICES SUCH AS FREQUENCY RESPONSE, SPINNING RESERVE, REACTIVE POWER AND BLACK-START CAPABILITY; WHICH ARE COLLECTIVELY REFERRED TO AS FLEXIBILITY SERVICES. HOWEVER, MOST UNITS IN THE INDUSTRY'S EXISTING FLEET OF TURBINE/GENERATORS ARE THE RESULT OF DESIGN DECISIONS MADE DECADES AGO WHEN THE ELECTRICITY SYSTEM LOOKED VERY DIFFERENT THAN TODAY. THIS GIVES RISE TO A MISMATCH, IN MANY CASES, BETWEEN A MACHINE'S OPTIMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS AND THE OPERATING RANGES REQUIRED FOR PROVIDING FLEXIBILITY SERVICES ON TODAY'S ELECTRICAL GRID, WHICH CAN HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON DAMAGE FROM WEAR AND TEAR. THIS IMPACT IS NOT A MINOR ISSUE: INCREASES IN DAMAGE FACTORS AS HIGH AS 400X HAVE BEEN REPORTED. IN RESPONSE TO THESE PROBLEMS AND OPPORTUNITIES, LPS CONCEIVED A RETROFIT OPERATIONAL FLEXIBILITY SYSTEM FOR LEGACY HYDRO PLANTS. THIS RETROFIT SYSTEM CONSISTS OF HARDWARE, ELECTRONICS, AND SOFTWARE COMPONENTS. THE SYSTEM IS INTENDED TO INCREASE A PLANT'S ABILITY TO CREATE VALUE BY GREATLY ENHANCING ITS ABILITY TO OPERATE FLEXIBLY WHILE DECREASING WEAR AND TEAR ON EQUIPMENT.
