About this award

The University of Connecticut received a $3,546,328 Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response (CESER) program (CFDA 81.008) to establish the CYBERCARED: Northeast University Cybersecurity Center for Advanced and Resilient Energy Delivery. The project aims to build regional collaborations across academic institutions, power industry enterprises, national laboratories, and government agencies in the Northeast to:

  1. Develop an intelligent cyber-physical system co-simulator to identify and emulate cyberattacks on distributed energy resources (DERs) and distribution systems to reveal their risks for grid operation.
  2. Research new tools for online attack detection, localization, isolation, and service restoration.
  3. Develop and expand education, training, and workforce development programs.

The award includes several sub-grants to partner institutions such as the University of Massachusetts Lowell, RTX Corporation, the University of Vermont, New York University, and the University of Rhode Island to contribute specific research and development efforts in areas like SDN-based cyber-resilient routing, DER cybersecurity, and preemptive security solutions for power distribution systems.
