Chemfinity Technologies, Inc. received a $3.0 million Cooperative Agreement from the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E, CFDA 81.135) awarded August 1, 2026, with completion targeted for July 31, 2029. The company will develop and demonstrate a proprietary polyporous polymer (PPN) column separation process designed to recover critical minerals and metals (CMMs)—specifically platinum, iridium, and two additional CMMs—from mining and metal refinery wastewaters at approximately one-third the cost of traditional mining methods while reducing energy use and emissions by greater than 99 percent. The project deliverables include demonstrating greater than 90 percent extraction rates of platinum and iridium from wastewater sources (Objectives 1-2), developing a commercially viable, integrated multi-column continuous-flow separation system capable of extracting at least four CMMs in pellet form, and validating commercial viability through techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) projections (Objective 3). Successfully executing this initiative could meet 100 percent of U.S. demand for iridium and rhodium, 28 percent of palladium demand, and 7 percent of platinum demand by leveraging currently untapped domestic wastewater sources. The cooperative agreement structure enables Chemfinity to establish partnerships with key industrial stakeholders to secure additional wastewater feedstock and expand market reach for the developed sorbent technology.
