The U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) awarded a $4,999,500 Cooperative Agreement to Susteon Inc. on September 11, 2024 under the CFDA program 81.135 - Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy. The purpose of this award is to pioneer the use of inexpensive, modular, dynamic, electrically heated catalytic reactors as a new technology platform for the production of aviation fuels and other valuable fuels and chemicals at market competitive prices. This award advances the efficient and economical use of stranded renewable energy assets to produce and store energy in the form of liquid fuels at significantly lower costs than battery storage.
As part of this Cooperative Agreement, Purdue University received a sub-award to develop a zeolite catalyst for oligomerization of olefins produced from Susteon's CO2 to light olefins reactor. Purdue will determine the operating conditions and steps for sustained performance of their oligomerization catalyst and provide necessary kinetic information to develop a representative reactor model. Purdue will also develop a dynamic process model of the overall system for processing CO2, water and electricity to liquid fuel to determine the optimum storage and operating conditions to minimize the cost of liquid fuel production.
