Description

Activities
The purpose of this project is to document the presence and intra-season temporal trends of pinyon JAY and other pinyon-juniper-sagebrush ecosystem bird species at 6 areas in the richfield field office, including three areas that have been actively managed (TREATED) for pinyon-juniper, and three control areas that have had no treatments. Many areas in southern utah and the colorado plateau are managed to reduce the encroachment of pinyon and juniper. However, the effects on the bird community, especially sensitive species, are not widely understood. The project aims to study how large-scale treatments affect and or disrupt wildlife migration corridors and ecosystem integrity. Monitoring data collected through this agreement will facilitate blms efforts to conserve and restore critical wildlife resources to their full potential, thereby allowing BLM to fulfill its multiple-use mission.expected deliverables and outcomes:1.using autonomous recording units, recipient will document the presence and intra-season temporal trends in vocal activity in pinyon JAY and other pinyon-juniper-sagebrush ecosystem bird species at the six areas in the richfield field office of the utah BLM. The recipient will survey three areas where land treatments have been conducted for pinyon-juniper removal and three control areas where no treatments have been done. 2.map the avian diversity of the sites, especially for rare and management of sensitive species, and identify hotspots of avian diversity. 3.use the information we gather to help BLM plan protection and management, in accordance with existing management plans for the areas.4.improving how BLM uses and integrates wildlife data and new research into its decision-making process.5.ability to measure and track the success of actions, projects, and treatments in areas targeted for habitat conservation and restoration.
Intended beneficiaries
The project funded through this agreement is for the primary benefit of the public by providing direct and measurable benefits that a wide range of stakeholders, researchers, students, and diverse communities. Pinyon JAY is widely recognized and loved bird of the intermountain west and colorado plateau that has been in steep decline. Knowing the locations of this species, its proximity to planned land treatments, and having information on areas of high avian diversity and management-sensitive species will help managers plan for a variety of wildlife management and nepa compliance projects in the field office and assist with meeting national and state BLM objectives identified above. Subrecipient activities (if known or specified at the time of award): not applicable.
