Cooperative Agreement AP26PPQST00C174
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded a Cooperative Agreement totaling $162,142 to the Oregon Department of Agriculture on June 1, 2026, to control and eradicate the invasive Japanese beetle in Oregon using biological control methods. The Oregon Department of Agriculture will deploy Japanese beetle traps to collect samples from infested areas, train scientists to isolate and identify the beetle pathogen as a biological control agent, and establish a...
- This cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service provides $129,850 to Michigan State University under the agency's Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care federal grant program (CFDA 10.025) to support ongoing field release of a fungal pathogen for biological control of the Japanese beetle from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2023. Key activities include analyzing field-collected Japanese beetles to determine...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) awarded a $126,352 Cooperative Agreement to The University of Kentucky Research Foundation (the Research Foundation) to conduct field trials and laboratory assays to determine if RNA interference can be used to control Japanese beetle. The award is funded under USDA's Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025), which aims to protect U.S. agriculture from economically...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded the University of Alabama in Huntsville a $104,432 Cooperative Agreement on June 1, 2026, to expand understanding of a Japanese beetle biocontrol pathogen in Alabama and develop methods for field-based grub infection research. The recipient will conduct field collections of Japanese beetles from multiple Alabama locations, screen them for pathogen presence, and establish tented experimental plots to direct adult egg...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded a $119,115 Cooperative Agreement to the Colorado Department of Agriculture on May 1, 2026, to continue biocontrol activities for rangeland ecology, noxious weed management, and pest suppression in Colorado and the West. The award funds identification of new biocontrol agents, rearing of agents when available, and environmental release to establish pest and weed management across Colorado and other western states....
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded a $118,526 cooperative agreement to the University of Wisconsin System, operating through University of Wisconsin - Madison, on September 1, 2026, to assess how soil characteristics affect the persistence and transmission of a biocontrol pathogen targeting Japanese beetles and to develop models predicting beetle emergence based on abiotic factors. Work performed in Wisconsin includes field sampling and screening...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded a $125,152 Cooperative Agreement to the University of Massachusetts on September 1, 2026, to develop classical biological control methods for box tree moth, an invasive insect pest that feeds on boxwood. The recipient will maintain insect colonies, conduct host specificity experiments on parasitoids of interest, and assist with related studies to support the petition process for releasing a candidate biological...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded Bioprodex, Inc. a $307,551 Cooperative Agreement on June 1, 2026, under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) to continue field testing formulations of Verticillium nonalfalfae, a host-specific native fungal wilt-causing pathogen designed as a bioherbicide to control Ailanthus altissima (tree-of-heaven), an invasive weed species. The work aims to reduce Ailanthus altissima...
- Federal Cooperative Agreement Summary The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) received a $115,250 Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025), effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. This award supports a statewide invasive exotic woodborer surveillance initiative designed to detect and assess the presence of...
- This $457,606 cooperative agreement from the US Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service will support the development of a classical biological control program to manage the Bagrada bug in California under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care federal grant program (CFDA 10.025). Activities include mass rearing the imported Bagrada bug parasitoid Gryon aetherium to make releases within California, developing identification tools for G. aetherium,...
THE PURPOSE OF THIS AGREEMENT IS TO CONTROL THE INVASIVE JAPANESE BEETLE WHICH IS A QUARANTINED PEST PRESENT IN COLORADO. THERE IS A NEED FOR AN ACTIVE ERADICATION PROGRAM OF THIS PEST AND BIOLOGICAL CONTROL WILL SUPPORT THIS EFFORT. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: JAPANESE BEETLE TRAPS WILL BE USED TO COLLECT SAMPLES FROM INFESTED AREAS IN COLORADO. SCIENTISTS WILL BE TRAINED TO ISOLATE THE PATHOGEN, AN EFFECTIVE CONTROL AGENT, AND IF PRESENT, WORK TO FURTHER SPREAD AND ESTABLISH THE PATHOGEN. DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: TO REDUCE THE OVERALL POPULATION OF JB AND SLOW ITS SPREAD ALONG THE FRONT RANGE, CDA WILL SURVEY FOR, COLLECT AND REDISTRIBUTE THE PATHOGEN. BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF THE PALISADE INSECTARY TO DETECT, COLLECT AND PROPERLY DISTRIBUTE THE PATHOGEN WILL AID THE BIOCONTROL EFFORT TO NEIGHBORING STATES WITH NEW OR GROWING JB POPULATIONS. INTENDED BENEFICIARY(IES): INFESTATION REQUIRES NURSERY EXPORTS TO UNDERGO COSTLY INSECTICIDE TREATMENTS, TRAPPING, AND PERMITTING. THIS CUTS INTO THE NARROW PROFIT MARGIN OF COLORADO'S NURSERY INDUSTRY, HARMING COMPETITION AND THE ABILITY TO EXPORT.
