The primary purpose of this 1-year award is to enhance the capacity of the U.S. berry industry by indexing, cleaning, and maintaining propagation material that is free of targeted systemic pathogens. Key...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded the University of Florida $124,783 in a Cooperative Agreement effective September 1, 2026, to validate a high-throughput sequencing protocol for detecting viruses in strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry/blackberry crops through an inter-laboratory comparison. The project brings together three laboratories—University of California Davis Foundation Plant Services, University of Arkansas Clean Plant Center, and Plant...
- This cooperative agreement between the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and the Division of Agriculture of the University of Arkansas will provide $586,432 to continue building capacity at the Arkansas Clean Plant Center. The Center will deliver diagnostic services for seven berry companies, running 20 high-throughput sequencing runs, 6,000 polymerase chain reaction tests, and 12,000 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays annually over the two-year...
- This Cooperative Agreement was awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care Federal Grant Program (CFDA 10.025). The primary purpose of this $168,300 award is to identify high-risk strawberry viruses by production region within the U.S., with the objective of developing evidence-based information on monitoring and best management practices to exclude viruses and...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) awarded a $390,000 cooperative agreement to the Division of Agriculture of the University of Arkansas on September 1, 2026, to enhance the capacity of U.S. berry industries by providing access to high-quality, healthy planting material. The Division will test, clean, and maintain propagation material free of all targeted systemic pathogens for blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry crops. Deliverables...
- Cooperative Agreement Award Summary The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) awarded a $205,355 Cooperative Agreement to the University of California, Davis, effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2026, under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025). The award supports research to improve virus detection techniques and update quarantine measures for strawberry (Fragaria) and blackberry/raspberry...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University a $160,916 cooperative agreement on September 30, 2026, to establish the feasibility of using focused ultrasound extraction (FUSE) technology to rapidly release amplifiable pathogen DNA from woody or lignified host tissues such as rhododendron and vitis species. The work applies FUSE to Phytophthora ramorum and Xylella fastidiosa as model pathogens to enhance the...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) awarded a $506,139 Cooperative Agreement to North Carolina State University (NC State) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care Federal Grant Program (CFDA 10.025). The primary purpose of this 1-year agreement, effective September 1, 2024, is to maintain and enhance the North Carolina Clean Plant Center programs for berries and sweet potatoes. Under this award, the NC Clean Plant...
- This $1.26 million cooperative agreement from the Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to Washington State University will support the university's Center for Plant Health to provide virus-tested plant material for fruit tree, grapevine, and hop industries through August 2024. Under the agreement, the Center will accept, test, and release commercially important cultivars free of economically important viruses for propagation. It will also retain and retest...
- The Division of Agriculture of the University of Arkansas will use a $225,000 cooperative agreement award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to ensure the continued operations of the Arkansas Clean Plant Center from September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2024. Under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care federal grant program, the Center will maintain, distribute, and test pathogen-free berry crop propagation materials; perform...
THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS AGREEMENT IS TO DEVELOP SCALABLE CRYOTHERAPY-BASED PROTOCOLS TO ELIMINATE VIRUSES AND POTENTIALLY VIROIDS FROM BERRY CROPS AND IMPROVE U.S. CLEAN PLANT PRODUCTION. FEDERAL INVESTMENT WILL SUPPORT OPTIMIZING CRYOTHERAPY-BASED VIRUS ELIMINATION PROTOCOLS, HELPING PRODUCE MORE RELIABLY PATHOGEN-FREE PLANTS, REDUCE DISEASE SPREAD, AND STRENGTHEN THE SUSTAINABILITY AND COMPETITIVENESS OF U.S. FRUIT PRODUCTION. THIS PROJECT WILL INTRODUCE INFECTED PLANT MATERIAL INTO TISSUE CULTURE, PREPARE MERISTEMS OR SHOOT TIPS USING LOADING AND VITRIFICATION SOLUTIONS, EXPOSE TISSUES TO LIQUID NITROGEN, AND RECOVER PLANTS ON OPTIMIZED REGROWTH MEDIA. CRYOTHERAPY WILL BE TESTED ALONE AND, WHEN NEEDED, IN COMBINATION WITH THERMOTHERAPY OR CHEMOTHERAPY TO IMPROVE ELIMINATION OF VIRUSES OR VIROIDS . THE RESULTING PROTOCOLS WILL STRENGTHEN CLEAN PLANT PRODUCTION BY MAKING PATHOGEN REMOVAL MORE RELIABLE, SCALABLE, AND BROADLY APPLICABLE ACROSS BERRY CROPS. THIS WILL BE AN IMPROVEMENT OVER CURRENT METHODS , WHICH OFTEN FAIL TO ELIMINATE RECALCITRANT PATHOGENS, AND SUPPORT STATE CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS, NURSERIES, BREEDERS, AND GROWERS.
