- Summary of Cooperative Agreement Award The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) awarded the University of Maryland, College Park a $100,036 Cooperative Agreement (May 1, 2026 – April 30, 2027) to expand pathogen surveillance capabilities within the National Honey Bee Pest and Disease Survey (NHBDS). The awardee will analyze existing and newly collected survey samples to add molecular diagnostics for four viral and non-viral pathogens and generate strain-level genomic data for...
- Federal Cooperative Agreement Summary Auburn University received a $115,872 Cooperative Agreement from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, to develop and validate detection tools for Tropilaelaps mites—a significant biosecurity threat to honeybee populations in the United States. The project will assess the sensitivity and practicality of existing and novel detection methods, including physical monitoring and environmental DNA...
- The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded a $300,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to the University of Central Oklahoma, effective February 1, 2026 through January 31, 2028. The award funds research to develop and validate a honeybee-based surveillance system for early detection of bacterial and fungal diseases in agricultural settings. The research team will deploy identical hives across three geographically distinct...
- This $100,000 cooperative agreement awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) supports the Ramsey Research Foundation's work to collect and study honey bee pests from the Tropilaelaps genus. The project aims to address gaps in knowledge that prevent effective emergency response planning for pest incursions in the U.S. by determining how to better detect...
- The Bee Informed Partnership, Inc. will receive a $142,676 cooperative agreement award from the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care federal grant program (CFDA 10.025). Through this funding, the Bee Informed Partnership will determine the composition, diversity, and recombination rates of deformed wing virus variants in honey bee and Varroa mite populations across U.S. commercial...
- This cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service will provide $219,718 to the University of Maryland, College Park through April 30, 2023. The funding supports survey, sampling, and diagnostic analysis to examine the relationship between in-colony wax varroacide residues and varroa mite resistance. Specifically, the University will utilize the USDA's existing honey bee health surveillance program to collect beeswax and varroa mites...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care (CFDA 10.025) program provides $1,122,000.00 over 4 years to fund the strategic placement of a scientist at a National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) laboratory. The scientist will be responsible for evaluating local and regional diagnostic methodologies, conducting regional risk assessments,...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) provides $197,482 to Iowa State University to develop standardized protocols for next-generation sequencing (NGS) of animal pathogens. The project aims to address the lack of consistency in NGS data analysis and reporting across veterinary diagnostic laboratories. The award will fund...
- Federal Cooperative Agreement Summary The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) awarded Colorado State University's Sponsored Programs division a $398,297 Cooperative Agreement effective September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2027, to support diagnostics development, specimen screening and identification, and diagnostics certification activities at the Science and Technology Pest Identification Technology Laboratory in Fort Collins, Colorado. The agreement enables continued molecular...
- This $67,487,870 cooperative agreement from the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service will assist laboratories in meeting responsibilities as outlined in the 2023 National Animal Health Laboratory Network agreement and support overall increases in network capacity and capabilities. Funding will be used for quality management systems, laboratory information management systems, staff expertise and proficiency enhancements, equipment upgrades, and...
THE GOALS OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO VALIDATE MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTIC METHODS, ENHANCE DETECTION OF PRIORITY HONEY BEE PESTS, AND BEGIN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NETWORK FOR HONEY BEE DIAGNOSTIC LABS. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THIS FUNDING WILL BE USED TO CONDUCT INTERLABORATORY RING TESTING FOR PROTOCOLS REQUIRING STANDARDIZATION AND INTER-LABORATORY VALIDATION OF SELECT STANDARD ASSAYS TO STRENGTHEN NATIONWIDE HONEY BEE DIAGNOSTICS. FROM THESE RESULTS THE LABS INVOLVED WITH TESTING WILL DEVELOP THE FOUNDATION FOR A COLLABORATIVE NETWORK OF HONEY BEE DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORIES. DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE DELIVERABLES FOR THIS PROJECT WILL INCLUDE SUMMARY DATA COMPARING RESULTS BETWEEN PROVIDED AND IN-HOUSE ASSAYS, INCLUDING A BEST PRACTICES GUIDE AS WELL AS RECOMMENDATIONS/RESULTS SHARED WITH STAKEHOLDERS BASED ON FINDINGS FROM COMPARISON STUDY. AN IMPORTANT OUTCOME FROM THIS PROJECT WILL BE THE CREATION OF A CONSORTIUM OF STAKEHOLDER GROUPS AND LABS THAT ARE COMMITTED TO ENACTING A BEE PEST DIAGNOSTICS NETWORK. INTENDED BENEFICIARY(IES): THE MAIN BENEFICIARIES OF THIS PROJECT WILL INCLUDE BEEKEEPERS THROUGHOUT THE US THAT FACE THREATS TO THEIR APIARIES FROM HONEY BEE DISEASES AND PESTS WHERE A STANDARDIZED APPROACH TO DETECTING SUCH THREATS WILL ALLOW MORE RAPID AND ACCURATE DIAGNOSES AND ULTIMATELY RESULT IN FEWER LOSSES DUE TO TIMELY RESPONSE. SUCH IMPROVEMENTS FOR BEEKEEPERS WILL TRANSLATE INTO BENEFITS TO US FARMERS AND CONSUMERS THAT RELY ON POLLINATOR SERVICES AND CONSUME BEE PRODUCTS.
