- Federal Cooperative Agreement Summary The University of Kentucky Research Foundation received a $165,850 Cooperative Agreement from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) awarded September 30, 2026, to conduct field testing of double-stranded ribonucleic acid (dsRNA) formulations for controlling Asian longhorn beetle (ALB) infestations. Building on prior laboratory studies demonstrating that orally delivered dsRNA induces target gene knockdown and larval mortality, the award...
THE PURPOSE OF THIS AGREEMENT IS TO CONDUCT CHEMICAL SYNTHESES OF INSECT SEMIOCHEMICALS FOR CHEMICAL CONFIRMATION, QUALITY CONTROL, INSECT BEHAVIOR RESEARCH, AND DEVELOPMENT OF LURES AND OTHER TOOLS FOR THE DETECTION AND CONTROL OF INVASIVE INSECT SPECIES. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE COOPERATOR WILL DEVELOP AND OPTIMIZE PRACTICAL SYNTHESES OF CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS THAT ARE NOT COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE BUT HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS POTENTIAL SEMIOCHEMICALS USED BY INSECT PESTS OR THEIR NATURAL ENEMIES. IN ADDITION, THE COOPERATOR WILL DEVELOP AND OPTIMIZE PRACTICAL SYNTHESES OF THOSE ISOMERS OR STRUCTURAL ANALOGS THAT MAY BE NEEDED TO UNDERSTAND THE BEHAVIOR OF THESE INSECTS. DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE SYNTHESIS OF CHEMICALS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF INSECT LURES THAT ARE NOT COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE FOR INVASIVE INSECT PESTS. INTENDED BENEFICIARY(IES): THE SYNTHESIZED COMPOUNDS WILL BENEFIT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF LURES FOR PROGRAMS SUCH AS THE COOPERATIVE AGRICULTURAL PEST SURVEY (CAPS) AND OTHER PEST PROGRAMS. CAPS IS A NATIONWIDE PEST SURVEY PROGRAM THAT FACILITATES TRADE AND EXPORT OF PEST-FREE COMMODITIES.
