About this award

The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded $3 million to the North American Plant Protection Organization (Nappo) on March 17, 2026, under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) to support boll weevil eradication efforts in northern Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Nappo will use the award to facilitate aerial applications and chemical treatments directly associated with boll weevil eradication in Tamaulipas, which shares a border with the Lower Rio Grande Valley cotton production zone. Eradication of boll weevil from cotton production is the expected outcome. Cooperators will monitor cotton fields for boll weevil activity and determine eradication status when zero specimens are collected over several contiguous seasons, with monitoring results presented in annual reports. The program protects U.S. cotton industry stakeholders and jobs by preventing boll weevil migration from Mexico into commercial U.S. cotton operations.

Performance period runs through March 16, 2027. Place of performance is the United States. The award carries no subrecipients or subawards.
