- The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded $100,036 to the University of Maryland, College Park on May 1, 2026, under a Cooperative Agreement to expand molecular pathogen analysis for the APHIS National Honey Bee Pest and Disease Survey. The recipient will add four viral and non-viral pathogens to molecular testing of 2026–2027 survey samples and generate strain-level data for low-prevalence, destructive honey bee viruses through long-read sequencing of...
- Federal Cooperative Agreement Summary The University of Maryland, College Park received a $100,000 cooperative agreement awarded May 1, 2025, by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025). The agreement supports the development of a comprehensive dataset comprising viral and non-viral targets of interest for honey bee health assessment across multiple survey years (2013–2014, 2014–2015, and...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded the State of Washington Department of Agriculture a cooperative agreement valued at $201,677 on July 1, 2026, to support honeybee disease and pest surveillance under the National Honeybee Survey. WSDA will receive live bee shipments from apiary inspectors in up to 25 U.S. states and territories and conduct diagnostic molecular testing to document which diseases, parasites, and pests of honeybees are present or...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded the New Jersey Department of Agriculture a $125,000 cooperative agreement on July 1, 2026, to conduct monitoring and survey activities for early detection of exotic honeybee pests, including the parasitic mite Tropilaelaps spp. and Asian honeybee (Apis cerana). The recipient will conduct pest surveys throughout New Jersey, with samples analyzed by the Agricultural Research Service Bee Research Lab. Five apiaries...
- This cooperative agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service will provide $219,718 to the University of Maryland, College Park through April 30, 2023. The funding supports survey, sampling, and diagnostic analysis to examine the relationship between in-colony wax varroacide residues and varroa mite resistance. Specifically, the University will utilize the USDA's existing honey bee health surveillance program to collect beeswax and varroa mites...
- The Bee Informed Partnership, Inc. will receive a $142,676 cooperative agreement award from the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care federal grant program (CFDA 10.025). Through this funding, the Bee Informed Partnership will determine the composition, diversity, and recombination rates of deformed wing virus variants in honey bee and Varroa mite populations across U.S. commercial...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded Auburn University a $115,872 cooperative agreement on July 1, 2026, to develop and validate detection tools for Tropilaelaps mites that threaten honey bee populations in the United States. Auburn will assess the sensitivity and practicality of existing and novel detection methods for Tropilaelaps mites, including physical monitoring techniques and environmental DNA collection approaches. The work encompasses...
- The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the Department of Agriculture awarded a $223,169 cooperative agreement to the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets on January 1, 2026, to conduct early detection surveys for exotic terrestrial plant pests in New York nurseries and ornamental crop operations. The recipient will conduct approximately 1,262 combined surveys—deploying traps and performing visual inspections—targeting pests including Siberian silk moth,...
- Federal Cooperative Agreement Summary The State of Washington Department of Agriculture (WSDA) received a $232,690 Cooperative Agreement from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025), effective July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. WSDA will provide diagnostic laboratory services supporting the National Honey Bee Survey by receiving and testing live bee shipments from apiary inspectors across up...
- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service awarded a $477,569 Cooperative Agreement to the University of Illinois on June 1, 2026, under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001) to develop genomic resources and conduct advanced molecular research on pollinator health, particularly honey bees. The University of Illinois will identify key gene regulation traits important for pollinator behavior, apply single-cell and single-nuclei RNA and DNA...
AWARD PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS AGREEMENT IS TO PERFORM HONEYBEE SURVEYS FOLLOWING THE NATIONAL HONEYBEE SURVEY PROTOCOL TO LOOK FOR HONEYBEE DISEASES, PARASITES/PESTS AND PESTICIDE RESIDUES.
