Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of this award is to support the university of guam in conducting a comprehensive survey for non-native mollusk pests and erwinia SPP. At high risk farms and nurseries across guam. This effort addresses increasing interceptions of actionable mollusks on imported agricultural shipments and examines the role of lissachatina fulica as a vector of erwinia papaya pathogens. The project aligns with aphis' mission to safeguard agriculture by improving early detection, assessing pest presence, and informing mitigation strategies.
- Activities
- • conduct BI monthly visual surveys at approximately ten farms and nurseries to detect target mollusk species. • collect mollusk specimens and perform preliminary identification. • extract DNA from mollusk feces and screen samples using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for erwinia SPP. • record survey results, GPS coordinates, and specimen data, and submit all pest detection data in national agricultural pest information system (napis) per program requirements. Deliverables and expected outcomes: • a complete dataset of mollusk species and erwinia SPP. Presence/absence at surveyed sites. • BI monthly survey records and molecular diagnostic results stored in the university of guam database and reported to napis. • a refined understanding of soft ROT pathogen movement via l. Fulica, supporting risk assessments for guam and neighboring regions such as hawaii. Intended beneficiary(IES): the agricultural sector of guam, including nurseries and farms, by identifying and mitigating harmful mollusks and plant pathogens, and the broader plant health community through enhanced pest detection data and improved management strategies. Subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award: no subawards. Financials: personnel (researchers, pathologist) = $36 ,320; supplies (gloves, sample bags, molecular primer, DNA kits) = $3,750; indirect = $6,011
