AWARD PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS AWARD IS TO SURVEY FOR EXOTIC DISEASES IN PENNSYLVANIA ORCHARDS TO SAFEGUARD NURSERIES AND FRUIT PRODUCTION FROM HIGH-PRIORITY PATHOGENS, INCLUDING PLUM POX VIRUS (PPV), CANDIDATUS PHYTOPLASMA PRUNORUM (EUROPEAN STONE FRUIT YELLOWS), CANDIDATUS PHYTOPLASMA PHOENICIUM (ALMOND WITCHES' BROOM), CANDIDATUS PHYTOPLASMA MALI (APPLE PROLIFERATION). ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: A MULTI-COUNTY TARGETED PEST SURVEY WILL COMBINE VISUAL INSPECTION AND SAMPLING/TESTING FOR PESTS AND DISEASES TO ORCHARDS AND NURSERIES. SURVEY WILL BE CENTERED IN ADAMS COUNTY, THE STATE'S TOP COUNTY IN BOTH STONE FRUIT AND APPLE PRODUCTION. SURVEY SAMPLING AND TESTING WILL BE COORDINATED WITH THE PA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE (PDA) AND PERFORMED ACCORDING TO USDA GUIDELINES. 3,000 PPV SAMPLES WILL BE COLLECTED FROM AT LEAST 12 STONE FRUIT BLOCKS IN AT LEAST FIVE PA COUNTIES IN MAY - JULY 2027. AT LEAST 12 APPLE ORCHARD BLOCKS FROM AT LEAST FIVE PA COUNTIES WILL BE INSPECTED FOR PHYTOPLASMAS IN AUGUST - NOVEMBER 2026 WITH AT LEAST 25 SAMPLES COLLECTED AND SCREENED IN PDA LAB. AT LEAST 20 STONE FRUIT BLOCKS FROM AT LEAST FIVE PA COUNTIES WILL BE INSPECTED FOR PHYTOPLASMAS IN AUGUST - NOVEMBER 2026 WITH AT LEAST 40 SAMPLES COLLECTED AND SCREENED IN PDA LAB. TESTING, DATA ANALYSIS, DATA ENTRY AND REPORTING WILL BE COMPLETED BY JULY 2027. DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: BY PERFORMING EARLY DETECTION SURVEYS FOR ORCHARD COMMODITY PESTS AND DISEASES, PSU AND PDA WILL BE ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE THE PRESENCE, ABSENCE, AND DISTRIBUTION OF TARGET PESTS, IDENTIFY POSSIBLE PATHWAYS FOR INTRODUCTION, AND MINIMIZE ERADICATION COSTS IF PESTS BECOME ESTABLISHED. OVERALL, THIS SURVEY WILL PROTECT PA ORCHARD COMMODITY PRODUCTION AND COMMONWEALTH RESOURCES. INTENDED BENEFICIARY(IES): SURVEY DATA WILL SUPPORT PHYTOSANITARY REQUIREMENTS OF TRADING PARTNERS TO MINIMIZE IMPACTS ON TRADE AND ENHANCE MARKETABILITY OF PA AGRICULTURAL (FRUIT AND NURSERY) COMMODITIES.
