Description
- Activities
- The PDA team will conduct a multi-county (at least 5) survey in southern PA to collect soil samples and analyze them for presence/absence of target nematodes, according to 2026 USDA approved methods. Sampling will be conducted at the sites identified by PDA staff as high priority locations, including crop production fields, and seed potato production fields. Targeted nematodes will include g. Pallida and g. Rostochiensis. Deliverables and expected outcomes: the cooperator seeks to conduct a program which is expected to result in: • obtaining information about the presence, distribution, or absence of the target pests. • identification of possible pathways for introduction of target species. • early detection of target species if introduced. • minimization of eradication cost if pests become established. • public education and awareness of vegetable crops pests. Intended beneficiary(IES): this survey supports the commonwealth of pennsylvania's commitment to protecting agriculture and sustaining the economy by preventing the spread of federally regulated nematodes in potato-growing regions. Early detection and containment efforts help preserve farmland productivity, protect grower livelihoods, and ensure the competitiveness of pennsylvania's potato industry. In parallel, the project also aligns with penn state university's land-grant mission by promoting applied research, science-based diagnostics, and outreach. Through collaborative diagnostics and training, this work strengthens golden and pale cyst nematodes surveillance and protects potato industry in pennsylvania. Subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award: the penn state university will assist by surveying and sampling additional norther counties for these potato pests
