About this award

The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded the Indiana Department of Natural Resources a $110,000 Cooperative Agreement on May 5, 2026, to conduct exotic wood borer and bark beetle surveillance in Indiana.

The recipient will place traps and conduct visual surveys at pre-selected sites including state parks, campgrounds, log yards, sawmills, veneer mills, pine plantations, nurseries, Christmas tree farms, and urban areas. Traps will be monitored bi-weekly for 90 to 180 days depending on target species. Visual surveys will be conducted during peak pest activity or when symptoms are known to be expressed. The surveillance targets the oak ambrosia beetle (Platypus quercivorus), ambrosia beetle (Megaplatypus mutates), walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis), six-toothed IPS (Ips sexdentatus), European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus), Asian longhorned beetle (Anaplophora glabripennis), and thousand cankers disease (Geosmithia morbida). The program is designed to detect the presence or absence of these economically important exotic species. If any targeted pests are detected, appropriate agencies will be notified to determine infestation range and age. Survey data will support commerce of Indiana timber and nursery products and inform regulatory management decisions and resource impact assessment.

The award runs through May 4, 2027, with performance in Indiana.
