Description

Purpose
The purpose of this agreement is to support early detection of box tree moth to protect virginia's horticultural industry and the production of these important landscape plants. The survey will assist in providing growers across the commonwealth with advanced awareness of any emerging populations, helping them better prepare for and manage the pest in their operations.
Activities
Vdacs will conduct visual surveys and establish and monitor traps for box tree moth at 45 high-risk locations including parking lots, parks, gravesites, residential developments, and businesses. Deliverables and expected outcomes: the recipient will conduct surveys that identify new box tree moth locations, enabling vdacs and USDA to respond quickly with the appropriate control and treatment measures, particularly if detections occur outside of the existing quarantined areas. Early detection and identification of locations will prevent the pest from spreading into production nurseries or large-scale natural environments. Overall, this survey will serve as a critical first line of defense to protect virginia's boxwood resources and slow the southward expansion of box tree moth. Intended beneficiary(IES): virginia's horticultural industry, especially nurseries and producers that grow and sell boxwood along with landscape professionals who rely on healthy boxwood resources will benefit from these survey efforts. Early detection data will also support vdacs, USDA, and other regulatory partners by enabling timely response actions and helping prevent the further spread of the pest.
