Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of this agreement is to provide funding to support biological control activities for two invasive weeds in west virginia; japanese knotweed and garlic mustard. This work will be conducted in west virginia to reduce populations of these invasive plants that harm our natural areas by reducing biological diversity and threaten economically important agricultural crops by competing for available resources.
- Activities
- Surveys for these two plants will be conducted throughout the state and new populations suitable for biocontrol release will be recorded. As biocontrol agents for these two species become available, releases will be conducted in high priority areas. From these releases, wvda will continue to add to established insectaries where biological control agents can be collected in the future for redistribution to new sites. The cooperator also plans to continue to rear psyllids for knotweed biocontrol in the lab. All data will be shared with USDA-aphis-PPQ. Deliverables and expected outcomes: presence / absence data for populations of japanese knotweed and garlic mustard throughout the state. This data will help determine where biocontrol releases are most needed. Establishment of biocontrol organisms may reduce populations of the invasive weeds, helping improve the overall health of native plants and agricultural crops. Reduction in the size and health of invasive plant populations may also prevent spread and establishment of these weeds in new areas. Intended beneficiary(IES): west virginia farmers who grow crops or raise cattle will benefit because this work could lead to reduction in invasive weed populations that may damage crops or grasslands in the state. The citizens of west virginia and visitors to the state who enjoy outdoor recreation will also benefit from this work as reduced populations of weeds will lead to healthier native plants and greater biological diversity.
