Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of this agreement is to provide monitoring, survey, outreach and regulatory activities to prevent the spread of box tree moth (BTM) after the discovery of the pest in three west virginia counties in 2025. Surveillance and outreach will be conducted for BTM throughout west virginia and compliance agreements will be put into place with nurseries and nursery dealers who will distribute boxwoods outside of the quarantine counties.
- Activities
- BTM surveys will be conducted throughout the state, specifically in high-risk areas for the detection of BTM. The work plan calls for the 30 traps sites in at least 10 counties. Compliance agreements will be established with all nurseries and nursery dealers that distribute boxwoods to non-regulated areas. And, at least 10 BTM outreach events designed to educate the public and nursery operators about this pest will be conducted during the award period. Deliverables and expected outcomes: presence / absence data for box tree moth in areas of west virginia not known to be infested. Outreach activities and compliance agreement work will train nursery operators on the signs and symptoms of BTM and greatly reduce the risk of artificial spread. This data will help facilitate safe trade, possibly lead to early detection of BTM in new areas and improve overall plant health. Intended beneficiary(IES): west virginia nursery operators who produce boxwoods and professionals who use this popular species for landscape designs. Also, the citizens of west virginia who enjoy boxwood plants around their homes and places of business. Subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award: n/a.
