AWARD PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS AGREEMENT IS TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR THE AR DEPT OF AG TO CONDUCT A COTTON COMMODITY SURVEY IN ARKANSAS AS PART OF THE COOPERATIVE AGRICULTURAL PEST SURVEY PROGRAM INTENDED TO FIND INTRODUCED EXOTIC SOYBEAN PESTS OF REGULATORY SIGNIFICANCE TO BOTH PPQ AND THE AR DEPT OF AG. INTENTION IS TO FIND THESE PESTS IN TIME TO EFFECT ERADICATION BEFORE THEY BECOME ESTABLISHED. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: COTTON COMMODITY SURVEY WILL BE CONDUCTED IN SEVERAL GEOGRAPHICALLY SEPARATE COTTON PRODUCING PARTS OF THE STATE OVER THE COURSE OF A FEW YEARS ACCORDING THE APPROVED METHODS AS LISTED IN THE COTTON COMMODITY SURVEY WORK PLAN. EDUCATION AND OUTREACH EFFORTS WILL ALSO BE CONDUCTED. OUTREACH ACTIVITIES WILL ALSO BE CONDUCTED WITH FARMERS PARTICIPATING IN SURVEYS TO EDUCATE THEM ABOUT COTTON PEST RISKS...HOW TO RECOGNIZE SUSPECT PESTS AND TO HOW TO REPORT THEM TO STATE AND FEDERAL REGULATORY AGENCIES. DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: PRESENCE/ABSENCE DATA FOR EXOTIC PESTS OF COTTON IN ARKANSAS. THIS DATA WILL HELP FACILITATE SAFE TRADE, POSSIBLY LEAD TO EARLY DETECTION AND ERADICATION OF EXOTIC PESTS AND IMPROVE OVERALL PLANT HEALTH. OUTREACH EFFORTS WILL RESULT IN MORE STATE RESIDENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE OF EXOTIC PESTS WHICH CAN HELP PREVENT ACCIDENTAL SPREAD INTO UNINFESTED AREAS. INTENDED BENEFICIARY(IES): FARMERS AND AGRIBUSINESSES IN ARKANSAS WILL BENEFIT BECAUSE THIS WORK COULD LEAD TO EARLY DETECTION OF EXOTIC PESTS THAT MAY DAMAGE COTTON IN THE STATE.
