The $649,995 award, spanning from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027, supports research to study the mechanisms of immune response and...
- This $200,000 Cooperative Agreement award from the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) supports the development of rapid detection methods for novel fish diseases that may emerge due to the growth of intensive aquaculture systems. The primary objective is to enable effective response and recovery measures to protect food security. The award recipient, Washington State University, has a...
- This $306,292 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (CFDA 10.200 - Grants for Agricultural Research, Special Research Grants) to Mississippi State University aims to develop a management strategy to control Enteric Septicemia of Catfish (ESC), a significant disease affecting the farm-raised catfish industry in the United States. The key objectives of this two-year project are to evaluate the virulence of newly constructed...
PROTECTION OF AGRICULTURE: THIS STUDY WILL EVALUATE PARASITES FROM BIRDS AND MAMMALS COLLECTED FROM AQUACULTURE FARMS IN ARKANSAS AND TEXAS. THIS CONTINUATION EXPANDS OUR CURRENT COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT ASSESSING THE IMPACTS OF BLACKBIRDS AND WATERBIRDS ON SPORT FISH AND BAIT FISH AQUACULTURE. FIRST, WE WILL CONDUCT COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF PARASITOLOGY ON BIRDS OF THE SAME SPECIES, ANALYZING INDIVIDUALS COLLECTED FROM AQUACULTURE FACILITIES ALONGSIDE THOSE FORAGING IN TERRESTRIAL HABITATS TO GAIN INSIGHTS INTO POTENTIAL TRANSMISSION PATHWAYS. SECOND, WE WILL EXAMINE MAMMALIAN PREDATORS COLLECTED FROM FISH FARMS TO INVESTIGATE THE PARASITES THEY MAY INTRODUCE TO AQUACULTURE SYSTEMS. ADDITIONALLY, WE WILL EMPLOY 16S AND COI METABARCODING TECHNIQUES, DERIVED FROM EDNA SAMPLING, TO FACILITATE COMPREHENSIVE COMMUNITY ASSESSMENTS BY SEQUENCING AND COMPILING THE DIVERSE ORGANISMS PRESENT AT EACH AQUACULTURE FACILITY. BY INTEGRATING LIFE HISTORY REPORTS OF FREE-LIVING AND PARASITIC ORGANISMS, WE WILL SYSTEMATICALLY IDENTIFY AND QUANTIFY THE ASSOCIATED RISKS POSED BY EACH PARASITE AND PATHOGEN TO OUR FARMED FISH STOCKS. WITH THESE HOLISTIC ASSESSMENTS, WE CAN BETTER ADVISE FISH FARMERS ON TARGETED DAMAGE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AIMED AT REMOVING SPECIFIC FISH PREDATORS, ULTIMATELY ENHANCING THE HEALTH AND PRODUCT IVITY OF AQUACULTURE OPERATIONS.
