Description

The recipient will contract with iowa state university veterinary diagnostic laboratory to test samples submitted by poultry producers for avian influenza. The recipient will promote biosecurity in the poultry industry in iowa. Educational outreach to national poultry improvement plan and non-plan participants will also be performed throughout the year via a quarterly newsletter, monthly disease updates and other communications. Further outreach will be provided at various events including the iowa poultry association fall festival and annual meeting, webinars, iowa state fair, poultry blood testing school, iowa EGG symposium, master's cup poultry show, small flock and allied industry biosecurity workshops. Three avian influenza veterinarian training workshops will be held across the state. A biosecurity audit will be conducted on one commercial layer, broiler turkey, and game bird flock. Five npip labs will be audited. The goals of the award are to accomplish necessary surveillance of poultry in iowa for NAI by conducting 16,535 tests for avian influenza. One npip biosecurity audit will be conducted of commercial layer, broiler, turkey, and game bird producers' biosecurity policies this year. Five npip laboratories will be audited. Upkeep and maintenance of the ARC GIS mapping project that started in august 2022 will be continued. A statewide poultry disease exercise will be carried out, as required per CFR for the initial state response and control plan. The recipient will report active surveillance testing metrics quarterly directly into the DIS system for avian surveillance. The entire poultry industry, including backyard flocks, will benefit by quickly identifying and responding to any incursions of NAI. Consumers of poultry will benefit if flocks are able to maintain a high level of production without NAI affecting their flocks. The general public will benefit from reduced avian influenza in commercial poultry flocks. A subaward will be provided to iowa state university to conduct the testing of samples for avian influenza.
