About this award

The Center for Food Security and Public Health (CFSPH) at Iowa State University received a $315,000 Cooperative Agreement from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) effective October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2027. The award supports development of practical, science-based disinfection guidance and training materials designed to help livestock owners prevent, control, and recover from animal disease outbreaks. Deliverables include a comprehensive online disinfection guidebook, species-specific and pathogen-specific training modules for various livestock and poultry operations, and disinfection tip sheets and tools addressing unique production challenges across different livestock sectors.

All materials will be provided in both English and Spanish to maximize accessibility and will be made available at no cost to farmers, ranchers, producers, farm workers, veterinarians, and animal health professionals through a dedicated CFSPH webpage. This project builds upon prior disinfection training materials developed under a previous NADPRP (National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response) award and leverages existing science-based biosecurity information to deliver practical disinfection strategies applicable to both routine and emergency response situations. The initiative aims to reduce animal disease outbreak impacts, protect food supply safety, and preserve the economic viability of farming operations and rural communities.

The project will develop an online disinfection guidebook, disinfection training modules for different livestock species, and disinfection tip sheets and tools to address unique production and pathogen disinfection challenges for different types of livestock and poultry operations. The project will leverage current science-based biosecurity information and compile practical and accessible disinfection strategies that livestock producers can use in routine and emergency response situations in animal production settings. Resources will be provided in english and spanish to increase availability to a broad audience of livestock owners and farm workers. All materials will be promoted nationally and available for free to farmers, ranchers, producers, farm workers, veterinarians and other animal health professionals on a dedicated CFSPH disinfection webpage. This project builds on the disinfection training materials that were developed in a previous nadprp project (fain AP22VSSP0000C008 "cleaning and disinfection 101: on-line educational training and tools for animal health professionals"). Producers and other animal health professionals will benefit from having free information and training on disinfection to prevent and control animal disease outbreaks. The project will ensure a safe food supply and protect the livelihoods and economic opportunities of farmers, ranchers, and rural communities.
