About this award
The New Jersey Department of Agriculture received a cooperative agreement award of $104,701 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025). The award, effective June 27, 2025 through June 26, 2026, funds the State Survey Coordinator (SSC) position and a vehicle to support statewide pest surveillance activities. The SSC will develop and oversee pest surveillance throughout New Jersey, conducting surveys as outlined in the New Jersey Crop Assessment Program (CAPS) Combined Survey Work Plan and serving as a contributing member of the New Jersey and Philadelphia Risk Assessment Committees to provide information to federal and state partners including the Commodity Booster Program (CBP), Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS), and Sentient Insect Tracking Committee (SITC).
The award deliverables focus on collecting presence and absence data for agriculturally significant plant pests and diseases to facilitate trade, protect natural resources, and enable early detection and response. The SSC will conduct outreach efforts to educate stakeholders and citizens on pest identification, contributing to early detection of harmful pests and diseases. The intended beneficiaries include the New Jersey nursery industry, potato producers, and soybean producers, who will benefit from early detection capabilities that control pest spread, prevent economic losses, and protect agricultural trade.
