Description
The emphasis of the new hampshire spotted lanternfly (SLF) survey is to support a survey for interceptions of lycorma delicatula at new hampshire (NH) wholesale and retail nurseries a pathway for the pest into the state. Reducing the likelihood of establishment and protect trade and public resources, early detection of SLF is key. Funding for this project will ensure that a targeted number of high-risk nurseries will be surveyed earlier in the season for SLF EGG masses. Inspection of stock from nurseries originating in the SLF quarantine area provides opportunities to remove EGG masses prior to hatch and coordinate activities with shipping states. SLF EGG masses was intercepted EGG on imported on incoming nursery stock at a NH nursery in 2020. In 2022, four NH nurseries received stock with viable SLF EGG masses from two SLF-infested states, and EGG masses were removed prior to emergence. In 2023, a NH nursey, received nursery stock with viable SLF EGG masses from three SLF-infested states. All EGG masses were removed prior to SLF emergence. The single NH nursery received more than 112 SLF EGG masses on 59 trees in 21 shipments. In 2024, four NH nurseries received nursery stock with SLF EGG masses, implemented best management practices, 230 SLF EGG masses were identified and removed from incoming nursery stock prior to sale resulting in a removal of approximately 11.500 potentially. NH has seen increase in the number of EGG masses detected and the number of nurseries where EGG masses have been detected between 2023 and 2024. A shift is seen in nursery stock origin between years. Activities to be performed the new hampshire department of agriculture, markets and food (NHDAMF) will identify ten (10) high risk nurseries that import trees from maryland, new jersey, and pennsylvania with established SLF populations. Locations were picked be based on size of the nursery, indication that they receive plants from nurseries in areas infested with SLF, and proximity to areas in the state where establishment may be more likely. The ten nurseries are in hillsborough county (3), rockingham county (4), strafford county (2), and merrimack county. Starting in april, conduct a visual survey of trees shipped to NH from states with established populations of SLF. Trees included in the survey will be those that SLF has a demonstrated affinity for EGG laying, including dogwood, cherry, red maple, black GUM and snowbell. The SLF survey shall be conducted from april 1 - november 30, 2025. Each of the ten nurseries will be visited a total of four times throughout the 2025 season, initial early season, mid- season, adults SLF visit and end of season. Deliverables and expected outcomes: the NH SLF survey data is used to ascertain the scope of the present of SLF that may have a negative impact of NH and american agriculture. This information provides additional benefit through gaining information and data on the presence or absence of the pest in the state. If pests are detected, the data will aid aphis and the state of new hampshire in taking expedient regulatory actions to curtain their spread. This data will also help facilitate safe trade, possibly lead to early detection and eradication of SLF, and advance overall plant health. Intended BEN eficiary(IES): results from these samples will provide data on the presence/absence of SLF in NH. Data on the presence/absence of SLF in NH nurseries. State personnel acquiring knowledge about SLF by conducting a pest detection survey. If SLF is detected during this project, the information will be an aid to aphis and the state in taking expedient action to curtail its spread and reduce economic losses in the USA. Conducting this survey for this retail nursery pest will increase the communication and cooperation with nurseries and UNH cooperative extension.
