Description

Activities
Adapt and expand existing sentinel plant network materials to align with the needs of public gardens and their communities, ensuring apga members have access to effective outreach tools. Conduct one in-person national-level workshop to train public garden professionals in pest monitoring, sample submission processes, and engagement strategies for community education. This workshop will serve as a springboard for additional community level workshops at individual gardens wherein volunteers will be trained on the same topics of monitoring for, identif ying, and reporting significant threats to plant health. Facilitate four volunteer training events at public gardens, equipping volunteers and community members with pest detection and reporting skills. Strengthen ties between public gardens, state plant regulatory officials, and aphis by promoting reporting pathways and engagement with diagnostic networks. Deliverables and expected outcomes: enhanced pest detection capabilities: trained professionals and volunteers will actively monitor for high-consequence pests, improving early detection and reporting efforts. Increased public awareness and engagement: community members will gain greater awareness of plant biosecurity issues, leading to broader participation in pest monitoring and prevention efforts. Stronger network of trained professionals: public gardens will be better equipped to serve as biosecurity hubs, integrating pest monitoring into their ongoing programs. Strengthened collaboration with aphis and npdn: increased connections between public gardens and regulatory officials will facilitate more efficient pest reporting and response. Sustained impact beyond the project year: the training materials and outreach strategies developed will continue to benefit public gardens, volunteers, and regulatory partners beyond the funded period, ensuring long-term contributions to plant protection. Intended beneficiary(IES): the program aligns with the american public gardens association's (apga) mission to champion public gardens as leaders in plant conservation. By empowering gardens with the knowledge to advocate for biosecurity, this initiative supports apga's role in advancing plant appreciation and conservation.financial support will enable the expansion of outreach materials and programs, helping to educate broader audiences and engage them with aphis's pest detection systems. This will directly contribute to safeguarding U.S. Agriculture and natural landscapes, supporting aphis's mission to enhance biosecurity and prevent the spread of harmful plant pests.subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award: n/a
