Description

The purpose of the adpros: animal disease preparedness and response training for law enforcement officers and emergency stakeholders project is to leverage and update previous training and curriculum created between 2006-2011 related to the weapons of mass destruction (WMD) basic agricultural emergency response training (AGERT) to train law enforcement personnel on issues related to a foreign animal disease (FAD) response. This project directly addresses the priority area described in the nadprp funding opportunity announcement by employing a multi-faceted approach to developing and delivering training and exercises for animal agriculture sector responders, including efforts to support outreach and educational efforts on animal disease prevention, preparedness, and response. Past training and subsequent incidents have shown those who have trained and exercised together are better prepared for handling an emergency. New mexico has a long history of working with partners to prepare for agricultural emergencies and does so by acknowledging that preparedness is a continuum in perpetual need of maintenance. The adpros project will leverage three project objectives to guide enhance new mexico's preparedness posture against foreign animals' diseases-O1: develop and revise curriculum and materials for the training; O2: host trainings and engage collaborators with training content by focusing on the law enforcement community; and O3: evaluate the workshop training materials and make curriculum available to external entities to expand animal disease preparedness curriculum. This will be accomplished by working closely with an interdisciplinary cohort of subject matter experts who have previous experience in this exact topic, the primary drawback their previous work is that IT occurred more than a decade ago and a new group of industry professionals has turned over. Key deliverables include conducting a thorough review from former WMD existing training materials and developing a revised training curriculum to host three, multiday trainings the intended beneficiaries include personnel from the federal bureau of investigation (FBI), local and state law enforcement, national guard, U.S. Department of agriculture animal and health inspection service (USDA aphis), U.S. Customs and border protection (U.S. CBP), state and local emergency managers, first responders, county officials, NM-alirt veterinarians, and associated agricultural stakeholder groups.
