Description
- Purpose
- The objective of california's red imported fire ANT (RIFA) survey is to identify probable points where RIFA may have been introduced and to revisit areas where RIFA was detected in the past to confirm successful eradication and prevent intra and interstate spread. 2.
- Activities
- The presence of rifa will be determined by visual surveys and/or by the deployment of protein bait stations by county agricultural C ommissioners' (CAC) and/or cdfa personnel. Personnel will be trained and then perform the visual and protein bate surveys september through january, with additional surveys in may and july. Suspect samples collected will be sent to the plant pest diagnostics center (PPDC) for identification will be accompanied by an electronically submitted pest damage report (PDR) form. Once the identification process is complete, the PDR system can be used to input relevant collection information, positive and negative, into the USDA-aphis approved database. The program will conduct five county audits to ensure all expenditures paid to county cooperators are legitimate expenses as outlined in the cdfa/CAC cooperative agreements. 3. Deliverables and expected outcomes: evaluation of the thoroughness of the survey can be quantified by the number of sites sampled and number of samples submitted for analysis. The methods to be used in this survey will be followed by confirmation of introductions and successful eradication if present. Negative survey results would indicate that rifa has not been introduced into california. Past efforts for eradication evaluations, outreach efforts, and quality control inspections on the survey techniques will ensure successful program delivery, preventing the spread of rifa. 4. Intended beneficiary(IES): a multitude of california agricultural industries, as well as residents at large. 5. Subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award: county agricultural commissioners in order to carry out survey work (see attachment B).
