Description
- Purpose
- The primary purpose of this agreement is to support the initial development of a biological control program targeting invasive flowering rush in new york state. Flowering rush (botomus umbellatus) has been invasive in niagara county for several decades and serves as a threat to native waterfowl, emergent plants such as wild rice along the niagara river, and the economically important erie county canal and niagara river populations in new york state. Bagous nodulosus is a semi-aquatic weevil that acts as a pest of flowering rush in its native range in europe. Its future release as a biocontrol is believed to be a possibly effective control mechanism to allow native species to regenerate and overtake established populations.
- Activities
- Prepare formerly constructed aquaponics unit in the greenhouse for rearing of b. Nodulosus. Survey niagara county for potential release sites and collect adult individuals of flowering rush. Obtain a permit to release b. Nodulosus into the local environment. Deliverables and expected outcomes: at the end of this agreement, cornell cooperative extension of niagara county will have prepared its previously constructed aquaponic unit for the propagation of flowering rush and begun growing a collection of locally collected flowering rush plants. Cornell cooperative extension of niagara county will also have secured a permit to release b. Nodulosus into the environment and identified the three most promising sites in niagara county to release b. Nodulosus using survey data about current populations of flowering rush. The survey data collected over the course of the year will be prepared and reported to USDA aphis in the final report. Intended beneficiary(IES): the businesses, public and industries of western NY that rely on the economically important erie county canal and niagara river.
