Description
- Purpose
- Spotted lanternfly (SLF) given the growing risk of costly (harper ET AL. 2019) invasive spotted lanternfly (SLF) expansion throughout the mid-atlantic and into midwestern, western, and southern states (wakie ET AL. 2020), the goal is to continue and expand operation of regularly visited survey sites at high-risk vehicle and train stoppage points along ohio's eastern border. 2.
- Activities
- Perform initial location-wide thorough surveys may - june for all 19 locations, and they will install and service traps in a total of 19 survey plots ("locations"). The cooperator will perform regular visual surveys in each location using the approved methods for national priority pests during the active season of the lanternfly (june - november). Five to six target sample "sites" (trees) in 19 locations (a total of ~110 woody stems) will be visited on average every 10(-14) days for 6 months for a total of ~2000 visits. Traps will be removed, recovered, and replaced each visit and a visual inspection of sites (traps and trees) will be completed. Numbers of trapped or observed lanternflies and their age class (nymph, adult, EGG) will be recorded for each visit. 3. Deliverables and expected outcomes: timely identification of a high-risk, national priority pest list insect, the spotted lanternfly, that continues to increasingly threaten natural and agricultural (e.g., grapes) resources in ohio and other midwestern (and potentially western) states. Early and cheap detection in a centrally located transportation state like ohio will slow and avert widespread financial losses due to the lanternfly. 4. Intended beneficiary(IES): ohio and USA 5. Subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award: none at this time.
