Description
WS protection of natural resources initiative - award purpose: the primary goals of this project are to a) analyze wildlife pathogen datasets to better understand emerging pathogens, B) clearly document methods used in any laboratory analyses or quantitative analysis of samples collected as part of the surveillance program, C) develop reports or manuscripts on findings that can help inform management and response to wildlife pathogen outbreaks, D) collaborate on new wildlife infectious disease research projects. Activities to be performed: wildlife services, in collaboration with the vandewoude laboratory at colorado state university, will partner to analyze data on emerging wildlife pathogens. The nwdp will share data with the vandewoude lab from samples that have already been analyzed and will share samples that have yet to be analyzed in case additional testing is warranted. Any remaining sample will be returned to the nwdp to be incorporated back into various sample archived. Deliverables and expected outcomes: these completed analyses will help identify risks that can drive pathogen emergence or can contribute to wildlife pathogen spillover events. By better understanding these risks, we can incorporate that knowledge in our response to outbreak events in wildlife, in domestic animals, or in human populations. Results can also be incorporated into downstream work that attempts to predict which pathogens may be a spillover risk in the future. Intended beneficiary(IES): by better understanding these risks, we can incorporate that knowledge in our response to outbreak events in wildlife, in domestic animals, or in human populations.
