About this award

The University of Vermont & State Agricultural College (UVM) received a $208,772 cooperative agreement award from the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care federal grant program (CFDA 10.025). The award will support UVM's production of up to 12 animated videos on topics related to animal disease response strategies between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2025. The videos will cover challenging subjects such as movement control, depopulation, and vaccination that are not adequately addressed in existing outreach materials. They will be posted on the Healthy Farms Healthy Agriculture YouTube channel for broad access by extension personnel, academics, private practitioners, and government veterinarians to help foster collaboration and understanding of foreign and emerging animal disease preparedness. The videos are intended to engage audiences and address predictable questions regarding disease response not covered elsewhere.

Description

In the event of an incursion of a high-consequence pest or disease of animals, those with affected animal species will be seeking answers to questions that go beyond how to implement biosecurity at the farm level. Currently, there are limited materials about animal disease response strategies such as movement control, depopulation, and vaccination that are easily accessible to those raising agricultural animals or their advisors. The objective of this proposal is to produce up to a dozen animated videos on topics such as these that can be distributed widely. The videos will be an engaging addition to the existing healthy farms healthy agriculture resources (https://healthyagriculture.ORG). The videos will be posted on the healthy farms healthy agriculture youtube channel and made available for embedding in websites and for distribution through social media channels. The videos will be produced with the intent of reaching a broad audience of extension personnel, academic instructors, private practitioners, and government veterinarians. These stakeholders will find the materials useful for understanding and communicating about challenging topics associated with preparedness for foreign and emerging animal diseases. IT is important to have answers to predictable challenging questions in order to foster collaboration. The proposed series of videos is intended to cover disease response-related topics not included in most other existing outreach and will be produced with broad geographic applicability as the goal.
