Description
- Purpose
- With this funding, more individuals will become aware of the issue of the invasive species pathway through recreational gear and equipment, and that they are responsible for preventing the spread of invasive plants and pests through cleaning boots and gear before leaving an outdoor recreation spot. By increasing the visibility of the playcleango brand, this project will increase the number of eyes on the ground, raise individuals' ability to detect key harmful pests, and improve awareness of how outdoor recreationists can stop the spread. Through engaging more partners from nonprofits, government agencies, and businesses nationally through the DON't move firewood and hungrypests campaigns, new opportunities for brand placement and messaging reach will expand the current reach. 2.
- Activities
- A. Provide targeted education and information to key audience groups, including producers/first detectors, environmental educators/i nterpreters, refuge friends and national park service friends, travelers, and youth at selected national conferences. B. Support the installation of trail signs or interpretive panels with boot brushes in highly traveled recreation areas and customized playcleango outreach materials, including work.clean.go. Materials for the field worker and landscaper communities, with partners to include local messaging. C. Expand social media audience and online reach through digital marketing through naisma, playcleango, and all partners' channels. D. Expand the reach of playcleango awareness week (june 3 - 10, 2023) with an updated media toolkit and existing digital graphics; add new partner organizations who commit to sharing digital marketing content during this targeted week's outreach efforts. 3. Deliverables and expected outcomes: 1. Increase in social media engagement from recreationists by 15%. 2. Attending, exhibiting, and/or presenting at four national conferences to distribute outreach materials, promote the playcleango program, and share opportunities for partnerships and implementation with the outdoor recreation, invasive species management, and related professionals. 3. Increase in the number of locations where the playcleango brand, trail signs, and boot brushes are placed to provide the prevention tool and invasive species prevention awareness as recreationists see the same clear and consistent message, including providing 30 playcleango® boot brush stations with interpretive signage to partners for installation to inform engagement with the option of having english and/or spanish text. 4. Translation of existing digital playcleango materials found within the naisma partner graphic library into spanish. Translations were provided by our partners in mexico, comisión nacional para EL conocimiento y USO DE LA biodiversidad (conabio). 5. Implementation of playcleango awareness week (june 3-10, 2023), a partnership with two major national invasive pest prevention awareness campaigns: USDA aphis hungry pests® and the nature conservancy's DON't move firewood®. We will recruit more national, state, and local partner organizations and agencies who will use the free outreach tools that we develop to reach new audiences and reinforce the message in existing channels. 4. Intended beneficiary(IES): farmers, growers, researchers, field workers, environmental educators, naturalists, and interpretive staff and others who are in a position to detect, identify and/or respond to pest threats (especially tribal, underserved, minority, and specialty crop producers), hunters/campers/other outdoors recreationists, and traveling members of the general public. This will benefit all residents and visitors nationally who enjoy outdoor recreation and our natural landscape resources. 5. Subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award: six contractors will develop and execute the communications, marketing, graphic design, boot brush purchases, accounting, general administrative grant support, and accounting portions of this project: michelle huntley (membership and marketing manager), john stabinger (digital project & user support director), brian olson (graphic designer contractor), tina page (naisma shop manager), kayla muñoz (numbersfornonprofits), TBD (program assistant).
