Description

Purpose
This survey will allow the cooperator to target areas of the state at risk for the introduction of european spongy moth (spongy moth) by placing and maintenance of up to 4,824 delta traps. The establishment of any of this pest would have large negative impacts on the state's forests, tourism, and lumber industry. This is the tenth year of the european spongy moth survey in kentucky; therefore provides an excellent opportunity to conduct the survey and educate various stakeholders about the threat of this invasive pest. 2.
Activities
The university of kentucky office of state entomologist will hire independent contractors and university of kentucky temporary technician employees as surveyors, train and supervise these surveyors to place pheromone traps in designated areas of the state. University of kentucky personnel will perform quality control inspections on surveyors' traps to ensure that the work is being accomplished in an acceptable manner. 3.deliverables and expected outcomes: the cooperator will provide survey data for the presence/absence data of european spongy moth in the state. This data will help with early detection of and rapid response to any european spongy moth populations discovered in the state. This type of early detection and subsequent actions have been an integral part of preventing the establishment of european spongy moth in the state over the last several decades and will continue to be part of the strategy to prevent permanent establishment to this pest in the state. This survey will protect commodities and natural resources important to kentucky and american agriculture. This data will help facilitate safe trade, possibly lead to early detection and eradication of exotic pests, and improve overall plant health in the state. 4. Intended beneficiary(IES): this survey will benefit public and private landowners of forested land. IT will also benefit urban and rural businesses and other beneficiaries of tourism based on forested areas of the state, and lumber industries throughout kentucky that depend on forest products for their livelihood. 5.
