Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of the agreement is to principally fund the positions of state survey coordinator (SSC) and public information specialist and data coordinator (PIS/DC) who manage and provide direct support to the florida cooperative agricultural pest survey program (CAPS). The funding also provides for the acquisition of equipment, supplies and critical travel costs for these positions necessary to ensure program goals and objectives are met in accordance with that stated in the work and financial plans. The funding also supports the ability for these two positions to engage in outreach activities and develop the informational materials distributed during these events. 2.
- Activities
- The florida state survey coordinator is responsible for overall program implementation and directly supervises all division of plant industry employees assigned to caps to ensure mission activities are conducted and completed as stated in the agreement. The SSC also develops the annual survey plans and selects the targeted pests for each of those surveys and ensures those surveys are conducted per national guidelines. The public information specialist and data coordinator is responsible for maintaining all program data and ensuring that data is uploaded into the national agricultural pest information system (NAPIS) database and develops all program-related outreach materials. 3.deliverables and expected outcome S: for fiscal year 2023, florida caps team will be conducting an exotic woodboring/bark beetle survey, a corn commodity survey, a cotton commodity survey and a nursery survey; that includes a total of 28 distinct target exotic pests and pathogens of concern to florida's agricultural industry and natural resources, and the nation as a whole. These surveys are designed to provide for the early detection or presence of these pests, allowing for the opportunity to eradicate them before they have a chance to cause severe damage. Most of the annual data collected by the program is negative, or shows that a particular pest is not present, and this greatly enhances the facilitation of trade of florida's agricultural goods nationally and globally.4.intended beneficiary(IES): while the surveys target specific sectors within florida's agricultural industry, many of the pests being surveyed for have broad host ranges that can negatively impact much of the other crops grown in the state, so the industry as a whole will benefit. Also, many of the pests can be a serious threat to florida's natural resources and could permanently damage and change the state's environment. That would have a serious negative impact on the citizens of florida and the millions of travelers that arrive each year to enjoy the diverse environment that the state possesses.5.subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of award: N/a.
